Hawaii Pacific University is a private coeducational university in Honolulu, which is the capital of the US state of Hawaii, as well as the most populous of all the state's CDPs, having a population estimated at a number of approximately 372 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Honolulu is the only incorporated city in the state and its name, in Hawaiian language, means ''sheltered bay'' or ''place of shelter.'' The population of its metropolitan area, known as the City and County, was approximated at a number of more than 909 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the 57th-largest metropolitan area in the States.
Hawaii Pacific was established in 1965, first starting as Hawaii Pacific College, which became a university in 1990, when the current name of the institution was adopted. In addition to the Honolulu campus, the university has another campus in Kaneohe, but, the downtown Honolulu campus serves most of the business, liberal arts, and other general programs.
The education at Hawaii Pacific is based on a traditional liberal arts foundation, today, the university offering numerous educational programs in various fields of study, through several colleges, which include the: College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Business Administration, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in each of its colleges and schools.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Sea Warriors, who compete in the Pacific West Conference, as part of the NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in golf, soccer, baseball, cross country, softball, volleyball and tennis. The school's most successful athletics program has been its women's volleyball team, which has won multiple national championships.
The list of notable HPU alumni contains resonant names, such as: Nicole Jo Moss - attorney for the defense in Perry v. Schwarzenegger, Kellie Peterson - Miss Hawaii International, and James D. McCaffrey - software engineer and author.
